Responding to Radical Islam

From the desk of Dr. Michael Youssef

When I place the headlines of global news alongside of God's Word, I see startling parallels. Within the last 50 years, many have begun to ask, "What is the Biblical significance of today's turbulent events in the Middle East? Is radical Islam a true threat to the Western world?" This week's attacks on a French satirical newspaper office at the hands of three men—all in the name of Allah—have only served to reinforce these questions.

Many leaders in the West display a frightening ignorance about Islam, falling for the propaganda that Islam is a "religion of peace" or that Allah and Yahweh are one and the same. As a ministry, I believe God has called Leading The Way to unmask these myths, to preach Christ and Christ alone, and to shed light on today's events with clear, concise, Biblical answers.

I was raised as an Egyptian Christian in a Muslim culture. I have seen firsthand how Muslims struggle to earn Allah's mercy, yet they have no promise of salvation, no peace, no assurance that they have done enough. My heart breaks for Muslims living under the curse of spiritual uncertainty and fear.

Yet today, many Muslim hearts are open to the Gospel as never before. We recently heard from a young former Muslim named Abd, who was raised to fear Allah as a harsh judge. One day, Abd found our Christian programs on THE KINGDOM SAT, our 24/7 satellite TV channel. He was amazed that all of his spiritual questions were answered on these programs. Every show had a common theme: the forgiving love of Jesus. Abd prayed and received Jesus as Lord and Savior, and he now prays daily for this ministry.

Abd's testimony is one of the many stories we hear of Muslims coming to Christ through the ministry of Leading The Way. We are uniquely positioned to reach the Muslim world around the clock, both over the airwaves and on the ground. In addition to broadcasting the Gospel there, our follow-up teams are staffed by committed believers with Muslim backgrounds who know how to relate to Muslim people.

I believe the spreading wildfire of Islamic ideology is one of the greatest challenges of our time. That's why I wrote my most recent book, Jesus, Jihad and Peace—to confront the core beliefs and motivations of Islam and to share how God has called Christians to respond.

This month, I want to offer you a copy of Jesus, Jihad, and Peace for your gift of any amount to Leading The Way*. The book does not release until February 17, but we want to make this special pre-order offer available to you this month. Your generous gift to Leading The Way will help us proclaim uncompromising Biblical Truth here in the Western world and reach many more Muslims around the world like Abd with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Now is the time for all believers to declare to a warring world that Jesus is the only way to peace. I hope you will join me in sharing this message with the world.

In Christ,

Michael Youssef, Ph.D.

January Notes from Our Inbox

Each month, we hear joyful reports of how the Lordhas moved in the lives of our listeners, viewers, and readers through the Gospel teaching of Leading The Way. As you read their stories, we hope these testimonies will guide you in your prayers for Leading The Way and fill you with faith in God’s mighty power.

“I have received the Lord as my savior and I am experiencing a joy that I never had before. I need help in learning how to practice prayers. All the people around me are Muslims. I went to the church in my city but I could not understand the language. Please help me know more.”

“Please pray for me so that Jesus will forgive all my sins. I confess that I have done a lot of things that displeased His heart. Please pray that I will return to His ways, because I am easily tempted. May God give me strength and forgive my sins. Amen.”

“For months, I have been watching the rich sermons that opened my mind more and deepened my understanding of the Word of God. Wonderful! May our God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ bless all who work in this blessed ministry that truly leads and feeds the sheep of the Lord.”

“I’m a young Christian and I’m amazed by Dr. Youssef’s teachings. I have heard the program on the radio and now I’m listening on the Navigator I got as a gift from the radio station. I’m so thankful to God for all the lessons I’m learning. Everything is so new to me. Thank you for your ministry.”

United States:

“I just watched Leading The Way as Dr. Youssef started a new series called To Know Jesus Is to Love Him. I’m deaf so I use closed captioning and I’m so grateful for that. As Dr. Youssef presented the beginning of this series, it just totally consumed me! It brought me to tears. It’s beautiful and I can’t wait until next Sunday to continue this series. Even though I can’t hear, I see and feel the deep passion Dr. Youssef has as he delivers these powerful messages. I look forward to Sunday evenings to watch and learn as I continue on my spiritual journey. Thank you for helping me along the way!”

From one of our TV partners in Pakistan: “One of our viewers told us that he was so fed up with his life and wanted to commit suicide because all sorts of evil thoughts and plans occupied his brain. But when he listened to Dr. Michael’s message, his life changed and he is now leading a happy life. Praise the Lord.”

Share the Gift of the Gospel This Christmas

From the desk of Dr. Michael Youssef

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the region where our Savior was born—the Middle East—has exploded in violence. In 2014, the Islamic State (ISIS) shocked the world, conquering much of Iraq and Syria while committing horrifying atrocities. In Israel, where angels once proclaimed “peace on earth, good will toward men,” the peace is shattered by ongoing conflict.

Yet the Good News is going out across this troubled region. We recently heard from Muhammad, who was flipping through the channels on his satellite TV when our KINGDOM SAT channel caught his eye. Day after day, he watched Christian programs in Arabic. Soon he wanted his wife and children to know Jesus, so he invited them to watch with him, and they all received Christ.

Muhammad contacted our follow-up team, who met with him and helped him find a church where his family could be baptized. Despite the risks of witnessing in a Muslim culture, Muhammad is so passionate about His faith in Jesus that he cannot stop sharing the Good News with everyone he knows. He found Christ thanks to your support of Leading The Way.

There is good news coming out of the Middle East because the Good News is going into the Middle East. The Gospel is the only force powerful enough to oppose Islamic expansionism. I love the Muslim people, and I want them to know the fullness of life that comes from a personal relationship with Christ. That’s why, in addition to broadcasting to more than 190 countries, we are specifically saturating the Middle East, North Africa, and Arabic-speaking populations in America with the Good News.

This month, generous ministry partners have committed $500,000 to Leading The Way—and they are challenging you to match their gifts in our December Gift Challenge. There’s no greater gift you can give at Christmastime than the Gospel—and that’s why I’m excited to share this special giving opportunity with you. With your participation, their $500,000 can become $1 million for the advancement of God’s Kingdom into places like Iraq, Syria, and beyond.

With all the bad news we hear today, you’ve probably wondered, “Can one person make a difference?” Yet there’s never been another time in history when one person could reach so many for Christ. Your faithful support enables Leading The Way to reach thousands more like Muhammad in the world’s most critical hotspots.

God has done amazing things in 2014. I can’t wait to see what He will do in the year ahead as a result of your partnership!

Your fellow worker for Christ,

Following Christ Can Be Dangerous

From the desk of Dr. Michael Youssef

What if you lived in a culture where saying “Jesus is Lord” could get you tortured or killed?

Jirjis* is a man in his forties who lives in Egypt. For much of his life, he was a dedicated member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

One day, he and other members of the Brotherhood met to plot the fire-bombing of a Christian church. That night, Jirjis dreamed that a voice was telling him, “Do not hurt My church.” The next day, he told the men he had changed his mind—he wouldn’t help them destroy the church.

The others cursed him, then piled into their vehicles to carry out their plan. On the way to carry out the attack, a traffic accident killed all the conspirators.

Others in the Muslim Brotherhood were outraged that Jirjis had refused to take part in the attack. They beat him, then locked him up without food or water for days. They tortured him and even pulled out his fingernails.

Because of his dream, Jirjis came to know Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Although he is growing in his faith, being a Christian and having health problems have made it hard for him to find work. A local church gives him some help, but its resources are limited.

When our ministry team learned what Jirjis was going through, we provided him with financial help to cover his rent and living expenses as he seeks to re-establish his life.

We rejoice to hear that many Muslims are coming to Christ. But conversion is just the beginning of the journey. Life is incredibly difficult for new believers in the Muslim world. Many face rejection by their families, job loss, imprisonment, violence, and death threats.

In the Middle East and North Africa—places where it is dangerous to follow Christ—Leading The Way is penetrating strongholds through targeted broadcasting, personal on-the-ground discipleship teams, and our Help The Persecuted ministry. Through these efforts, God is bringing eternal hope to the lost and much-needed help to our brothers and sisters in Christ.

As the need grows, our commitment grows. This year, our disbursements to persecuted Christians increased by more than 200 percent. By God’s grace, we were able to provide assistance to thousands of Christians, including Syrian and Iraqi refugees. We regularly provide living expenses for believers forced from their homes and jobs, plus medical expenses, emergency funds, travel help, and pastoral care.

This month, as we reflect on all that we are thankful for, I am so grateful for the freedom we have to share the Gospel. But many do not have this freedom. Will you join me in praying for them? Will you help Leading The Way continue to proclaim and demonstrate the Gospel in hostile regions?

I thank God for your prayers and gifts to Leading The Way, which help us to provide both spiritual and physical nourishment to so many. May God bless you and your family this Thanksgiving as you reflect on His faithfulness.

In Christ,

Uniting to Support the Persecuted Church

Uniting to Support the Persecuted Church

What would you do if terrorists burned down your home because they knew you were a Christ-follower? If your husband was killed for being a Christian? If your family disowned you for your faith in Jesus?

Around 80% of all acts of religious discrimination are directed toward Christians, and nearly 100,000 believers are killed for their faith every year. We belong to a global Body of Christ—how can we support our brothers and sisters who are suffering daily for His name?

This month, Leading The Way is uniting with ministries around the world to pray for the persecuted church. Here are some specific ways you can join us in praying for and supporting our brothers and sisters in Christ:

Pray for the Persecuted Church

  • Pray that persecuted believers will know that God is with them in the midst of their suffering and be strengthened by His love, power, and peace (Psalm 23:4).
  • Pray that they will experience God’s provision and protection—both physically and spiritually (2 Corinthians 1:9-11).
  • Pray that what is intended for evil will be used by God to advance the Gospel in mighty ways (Philippians 1:12-14).

Support the Persecuted Church

Leading The Way has been directly meeting the needs of persecuted believers since 2011, after we began receiving regular phone calls, Skype messages, texts, and emails from listeners and viewers in the Middle East and North Africa—one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a Christian. Messages like these have become common responses to our broadcasts in the region:Joshua Youssef discusses the critical need for support for Christians in the Muslim world

“I am thinking of becoming a Christian, but my father has threatened to disown me and kick me out of the house if I convert.” –Morocco

“Please help me as soon as possible, as the news about my faith has started to spread among my relatives and friends. My life is now in danger.” –Egypt

Through your support, Leading The Way not only broadcasts the Gospel, but also provides personal follow-up for Truth-seekers and new believers through on-the-ground teams and direct support through our Help The Persecuted ministry. This practical support comes in the form of rent, pastoral care, medical funds, travel help, emergency needs like food and bedding for refugees, and school tuition.

As our brothers and sisters in Christ endure job loss, imprisonment, torture, and estrangement from their own families, we can help them. Will you join us?
