I remember the army officers standing at the office door. My father had gone to work as he always did, providing for his family through a small oil distributorship in Egypt. That day he came home and sat us down. The company was no longer private. It belonged to the state. The officers had sent him and his colleagues home as if a lifetime of labor could be erased by a government order. I remember learning to speak in whispers. Under Gamal Abdel Nasser, informants were everywhere: in workplaces, neighborhoods, schools, even among students. My parents warned me to be careful about what I said. A careless word could travel faster than a child understood. I remember the library. As a young man, I checked out books about America—about freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to say what you believed without fearing the knock at the door. I was mesmerized. I was also afraid someone might report what I was reading. That is how oppression works. It does not have to arrest everyone. It only has to teach everyone to be afraid. I Learned Freedom by Losing It I was born into Egypt’s Coptic Christian community in 1948. Four years later, nationalist military leaders forced King Farouk into exile. Nasser soon became, in effect, the dictator of an Islamist-socialist military regime. The words sound academic until they reach your kitchen table. Banks were nationalized. Foreign commercial holdings were nationalized. Private companies and land were seized. Christians who had lived in Egypt for centuries became second-class citizens. Highly educated believers were pushed out of leadership and into menial work. Churches were restricted. Evangelism was confined. Speech narrowed until even home felt unsafe. Not all Muslims were hostile to me. I had Muslim friends from moderate, enlightened homes, and I thank God for them. I am not writing with contempt for people. I am writing against ideologies that make neighbors afraid of one another and replace conscience with control. I left Egypt in my teens with the clothes on my back. I did not come straight to America. For years I lived and worked elsewhere, and in 1977 I moved to the United States from Australia. I became a citizen in 1984. That order matters. I was already free. I still chose America because, in my heart, I had loved her freedoms long before I held her passport. And so you understand my heart and why I must speak out when I see socialism become a celebrated campaign platform in America. A Movement Can Become Normal Before It Is Loved I know many Americans do not think they are embracing socialism. The numbers bear that out. A Marquette Law School national poll released just this month found the Democratic Socialists of America underwater with the public: 24 percent favorable, 54 percent unfavorable. Among independents, the numbers were even colder. But that is not the whole story. The same poll split its sample. Half were asked about the organization. Half were asked about democratic socialist candidates. The organization stood at a net minus 30. The candidates stood at a net minus 22. For scale, MAGA stood at a net minus 26. Not one name in that poll came out ahead, and that fact should humble anyone tempted to triumphalism. Still, the comparison reveals something serious. The label is more toxic than the people carrying it. Bernie Sanders, the best-known socialist figure in American politics, stood at 45 favorable, 47 unfavorable, with only 8 percent saying they had not heard enough. He was two points from even while Donald Trump, whom almost no one lacked an opinion about, stood at a net minus 22, and Vice President JD Vance, known to just as many people as Sanders, stood at minus 16. That does not mean America has embraced socialism. It means an ideology can be rejected by name and still become normal through personalities people trust. That is how ideas travel. They do not always arrive wearing their own uniform. On August 4, Abdul El-Sayed narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary. Socialist state legislator, Francesca Hong lost the Wisconsin democratic primary for governor by less than 4,000 votes.  And most alarmingly, the Democratic Socialists of America are now the largest socialist organization in United States history, reporting more than 120,000 members as of July 4, up from roughly 5,000 a decade ago, and exceeding the peak membership of Eugene Debs’s Socialist Party in 1912. A movement does not need to be loved to become powerful. It only needs to become familiar.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) (@demsocialists) When “Forever” Belongs to Government In an August 9 interview on ABC’s This Week, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke of “a time of renewal for the Democratic Party” and “an ascendance of a young, inspiring, exciting electorate.” Young people are carrying real economic pain, and she said plainly that many feel ignored, sidelined, and burdened by decisions made before them. That objection deserves to be heard honestly. A young family struggling with rent, groceries, medical bills, and debt may hear warnings about socialism and think, “You are defending a system that is not working for me.” I understand why a promise of affordability sounds compassionate. I understand why “renewal” sounds hopeful. But renewal of what, and toward what? In that same interview, Jonathan Karl read from the DSA’s own adopted national platform: defunding the Department of Defense, closing overseas military bases, abolishing the police and prison system. She did not endorse those positions. Her answer was, “No, but I think that this is a free country. Everyone can have all sorts of beliefs,” and then she redirected to lowering bills and helping people afford a doctor. That exchange is a warning about a mechanism, not about a person. Radical content can be carried quietly inside a movement whose public face is compassion. The platform is not defended. It is not fully repudiated. It is set aside as an academic debate while the argument moves to affordability. The most dangerous ideas are not always the ones a nation argues about. Sometimes they are the ones it stops arguing about. Months earlier, at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics, David Axelrod asked whether she would run for president or for Senator Schumer’s seat. She answered that her ambition was not a title or a seat. “They assume that my ambition is positional. They assume that my ambition is a title or a seat. And my ambition is way bigger than that.” Then: “Presidents come and go. Senate, House seats, elected officials come and go. But single-payer healthcare is forever. A living wage is forever. Workers’ rights are forever. Women’s rights, all of that.” My friends, I hope you are listening. That is a serious claim about permanence. I have heard “forever” before. I heard it from regimes and ideologies that believed they could own the future. Nasser is gone. His boast is gone. The Church in Egypt is still there. Only God owns forever. What does the Psalmist write? “Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.” ESV text: Psalm 2:10-12 Psalm 2 does not flatter kings, parties, movements, or crowds. It tells rulers to be wise because they are accountable to the Lord. It tells nations that rage against His authority that they are not owners, only renters. They may not see the Owner with their eyes, but He will come. Freedom without authority becomes anarchy. Authority without freedom becomes slavery. True liberty lives under the authority of the Word of God. What Faithfulness Requires Now Some Christians tell me political neutrality protects our Gospel witness. I understand that concern. I have seen believers confuse the Kingdom of God with earthly parties, and that is a grave mistake. But silence in the face of evil is not faithfulness. Salt that stays in the shaker preserves nothing. Jesus did not call His people to panic, rage, or sneer. He called us to be salt and light in Matthew 5:13–16, to love our neighbors enough to speak Truth before the chains are fastened. In my most recent book, An Unholy Alliance, I have warned that Marxists and Islamists may hate one another, but they can still work together when their common enemy is Biblical authority. I saw the joining of those forces in the Egypt of my youth. I saw another form of it in Iran in 1979, when leftists and Islamists helped bring down the Shah, only for Khomeini to destroy the leftists once he held power. One side imagines it can use the other. In the end, tyranny devours its partners. My plea is not for Christians to become harsh. I pray for those who are lost. I long for them to know the loving God. I rejoice whenever I see someone come to Christ. My plea is for courage with tears. America’s freedoms are not self-sustaining. They depend on moral foundations deeper than law, deeper than elections, deeper than slogans about renewal or forever. When government becomes provider, savior, parent, priest, and judge, it does not merely mismanage the economy. It tries, and always fails, to replace God. I fled that kind of world once. I do not want to watch my adopted country walk toward it without knowing where it leads. So I am asking you to join more than half a million believers who are praying for our families, our churches, and our nation — not as a substitute for courage, but as its source. A nation that has forgotten God will not be argued back to Him. He must draw her home. Our part is to ask.

On September 11, 2001, America watched smoke rise from the heart of New York City. We watched men and women run for their lives. We watched firefighters and police officers climb into danger while others fled from it. We watched a nation mourn nearly 3,000 murdered souls. And we said, “Never forget.” Now, twenty-five years later, I must ask: did we mean it? My friends, remembrance is not sentiment. Remembrance is not a ceremony, not a slogan, not a wreath laid for cameras and then forgotten by nightfall. Biblical remembrance means moral clarity. It means we remember evil as evil. We remember sacrifice as sacrifice. We remember Truth as Truth. After 9/11, the shock wore off, and the emotions faded. We pushed the snooze button and we went back to sleep. America’s response was too often ruled by emotion rather than conviction, and a “blame America first” instinct soon returned in government, media, Hollywood, and universities. That danger is more urgent now. The issue before us is not the private religion of any elected official. America must defend religious liberty for all people. The issue is ideology. The issue is whether we have the courage to distinguish between peaceful Muslims, who should be treated with dignity, and political Islam, which seeks power, control, and submission. It is also whether we have the courage to reject socialism, which promises compassion while concentrating power in the hands of the state. I know both dangers. I did not learn them from a textbook. I grew up under Islamic socialism in Egypt, and I saw firsthand what happens when government says, “We know best.” Redistribution and nationalization turned a country with few poor people into a country where nearly everyone became poor. Everyday life in Cairo, 1955. In subsequent years, Nasser’s government expanded nationalization and formally embraced Arab socialism. Socialism always arrives with tender language. It speaks of fairness. It speaks of justice. It speaks of helping the poor. But when the state replaces personal responsibility, when the state replaces family, when the state replaces charity, when the state replaces God—it does not produce freedom. It produces bondage. Political Islam also arrives with carefully chosen language. It speaks of tolerance, inclusion, coexistence, and dialogue. But Islamists know how to use the freedoms of a free society in order to weaken that society from within. They use public relations, institutions, media, and politics, not only bombs and bullets, to advance an ideology that is hostile to freedom. Brothers and sisters, listen carefully: terrorism is a tactic. Ideology is the enemy. For too long, we have fought the wrong war, focusing on violent acts while ignoring the Islamist ideology beneath them. Violent jihad destroyed buildings on 9/11. Stealth jihad seeks to reshape minds, rewrite history, and occupy institutions. That is why the Muslim Brotherhood must never be treated as a harmless civic association. The Brotherhood’s own strategic memorandum described its work in America as a “Civilization-Jihadist Process” aimed at “eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within.” Those are not my words. That is their stated vision. So when Americans shrug at the spread of political Islam into public office, education, media, and civic institutions, they are not showing compassionate equality and inclusion. They are showing willful ignorance. When New York City, of all places, normalizes leaders who advance socialist policies while giving cover to the language and ambitions of political Islam, the question is not whether we are tolerant. The question is whether we are awake. Do you remember the debate over the proposed Islamic center near Ground Zero? That location carried deep symbolic meaning: the building had been struck and damaged by debris from the 9/11 attack. Building there would have symbolized conquest—not peace. Political correctness is irrational and unjust. We have watched political correctness push crosses and other Christian symbols from the public square, not because reason demanded it, but because ideological pressure did. That same spirit has only grown more pervasive today. It shames Christians into silence. It brands moral clarity as bigotry. It treats concern about political Islam as hatred. It treats socialism as compassion. It tells us to forget what we saw with our own eyes. But God’s people must not forget. Every day we must decide if we will be ambassadors of Heaven or succumb to the city of man. Scripture commands us to be watchful and stand firm (1 Corinthians 16:13). Jesus tells us that Truth sets people free (John 8:31-32). The Lord does not call us to panic. He calls us to discernment. He does not call us to hatred. He calls us to holiness. He does not call us to fear. He calls us to faithfulness. And let me be plain: our ultimate hope is not in City Hall. It is not in Washington. It is not in a party, a candidate, or a court. We must never put our hope in a political party, but in the power of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Yet Christian hope is not passivity. Hope does not mean silence. Hope does not mean surrender. Hope means we speak Truth in love. Hope means we defend religious liberty without empowering religious tyranny. Hope means we care for the poor without bowing before socialism. Hope means we love Muslims enough to share Christ with them, and love America enough to warn her against political Islam. Two forces are tearing at the foundations of our republic: radical political Islam from without and aggressive secularism from within. Though they contradict each other, they often cooperate in weakening the Judeo-Christian foundations that made the freedoms we enjoy in the US possible. That is the great irony of our age. Secular progressives think they are liberating America from Christianity, but in removing the Biblical foundation, they are opening the door to ideologies far less tolerant than the faith they despise. My friends, hear this: the answer is not rage. The answer is repentance. We must repent of forgetting God. We must repent of trading Truth for comfort. We must repent of allowing our children to be discipled by ideologies that hate the Gospel. We must repent of cowardice dressed up as kindness. And then we must stand. Stand for the families who still grieve 9/11. Stand for the Constitution. Stand for the persecuted church. Stand for Jewish neighbors threatened by ancient hatred in modern dress. Stand for Muslims trapped under the fear and control of Islamist ideology. Stand for the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the only power that can save sinners, transform hearts, and bring true peace. We said we would never forget. By God’s grace, let us remember rightly. Let us remember with courage. Let us remember with repentance. Let us remember with hope. And let us teach our children that freedom is never preserved by slogans—it is preserved by Truth, sacrifice, and faithfulness before Almighty God.

QUESTION: “Revelation is such a difficult book of the Bible. Why should I spend time studying it?” ANSWER: There are no two books of the Bible Satan hates more than Genesis and Revelation. In Genesis, God pronounces his death sentence. And in Revelation, the sentence is carried out. I’m convinced Satan is behind the false teaching that calls Genesis a myth and Revelation a mystery. He wants to hide the Truth from us—the Truth of Christ’s victory and his ultimate defeat. You see, the promise of the Lord’s second coming is repeated several times in Revelation: “I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown” (Revelation 3:11). When that promise is fulfilled, it will be the greatest day in history. On that day, the oppressive rule of Satan ends, and the glorious reign of Jesus begins. One of the greatest blessings of studying Revelation is that it lifts our eyes to these incredible future events, filling us with a sense of expectation and hope that impacts our daily decisions. The Christian who believes in the reality of heaven lives differently, full of hope and joyful anticipation. The believer knows that the resurrection awaits, that eternal life with Christ is coming. So dig into the themes of Revelation and rejoice in the new heaven and the new earth that are coming—and the best part of heaven, Jesus.

A shepherd once told me that a sheep rarely runs away from the flock in one dramatic moment. It drifts. Slowly, quietly, almost imperceptibly, it moves farther from the shepherd’s voice until, one day, it discovers that it is lost and does not know the way home. That is an apt picture of Canada today. Canada is no longer simply post-Christian. It is theologically fragmented. This is more than a cultural adjustment or a philosophical shift; it is a doctrinal unraveling. When Christian doctrine unravels, Truth is obscured. When Truth is obscured, faith weakens. And when faith weakens, both individuals and churches begin to drift. The question is not merely, “What is happening to Canada?” The more urgent question is, “Where do you stand in the midst of it?” What anchors your soul when nearly everything around you is moving? The Ligonier State of Theology 2025: Canada surveyed more than 3,000 Canadian adults, and its findings confirm what faithful pastors and Biblical Christians have long observed: theological confusion is no longer peripheral. It is widespread, normalized, and deeply embedded in the culture. The language of faith has not entirely disappeared, but its meaning is fading. People still speak about God, but many do not know the God revealed in Scripture. They still use Biblical words, but they increasingly reject Biblical Truth. Christianity has not simply been discarded; it has been reconstructed according to personal preference. That is more dangerous than honest unbelief. Confusion About God Consider the doctrine at the very heart of the Christian faith: the nature of God Himself. Only 36 percent of Canadians strongly agree that there is one true God in three Persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Nearly an equal proportion either disagree or remain uncertain. This is not a minor theological detail. The Trinity is not an optional doctrine for specialists to debate. It concerns the identity of the living God. The confusion becomes even clearer when we consider religious pluralism. Sixty-three percent of Canadian adults agree that God accepts the worship of all religions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, while another 17 percent are unsure. My friends, hear me clearly: the belief that all religions lead equally to God cannot be reconciled with the words of Jesus Christ. He did not say, “I am one possible way.” He declared, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). That claim is exclusive because Truth, by its very nature, is exclusive. Two contradictory claims cannot both be true. Either Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father, as He said, or He is not. There is no comfortable middle ground. A culture may continue to speak warmly about spirituality while rejecting the God of Scripture. It may retain “God-talk” while losing God-knowledge. But once Christ is no longer recognized as the unique Savior, He will inevitably be reduced to a teacher, a moral example, or a spiritual guide. And that is precisely what the study reveals. The Collapse of Biblical Authority Behind every major doctrinal collapse lies a crisis of authority. Who has the final word—God or man? Scripture or culture? The revealed Truth of God or the changing preferences of the human heart? Only 18 percent of Canadians strongly affirm that the Bible is fully accurate in all it teaches. Think about that. The overwhelming majority of the nation either rejects, doubts, or remains uncertain about the God-breathed Word that was given to reveal who God is, who we are, and how sinners may be reconciled to Him. When people reject the authority of Scripture, they close their ears to the voice of God—not because God has ceased to speak, but because they have ceased to listen. This is why the struggle over the Bible is never merely academic. If Scripture is not authoritative, then every doctrine becomes negotiable. God may be reimagined. Jesus may be redefined. Sin may be minimized. Salvation may be reinvented. Morality may be adjusted to suit the spirit of the age. The first question of the serpent in the Garden was, “Did God really say?” That question still echoes through every generation. It is the question behind every compromise, every distortion, and every effort to place human judgment above divine revelation. Beloved, we must decide: Will we believe what God has spoken, or will we believe only those portions that agree with us? The Dangerous Myth of Human Goodness More than 65 percent of Canadians agree that “everyone sins a little, but most people are good by nature.” That statement may sound compassionate and reasonable, but it strikes at the very foundation of the Gospel. If man is basically good, then the Cross becomes unnecessary. If our problem is merely ignorance, weakness, or a lack of opportunity, then we need education, encouragement, or social improvement—not a Savior. But Scripture teaches something far more serious. Humanity is not merely imperfect; humanity is fallen. Sin is not an occasional blemish on an otherwise pure nature. It is rebellion against a holy God, and it has corrupted every part of human life. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). This does not mean that every person is as evil as he or she could possibly be. It means that no person is righteous enough to stand before God on the basis of personal goodness. We are not saved because we are better than others. We are saved only by the mercy and grace of God through Jesus Christ. Here is the dividing line of all theology: Do we believe what God has declared about man, or what man prefers to believe about himself? What do you believe about your own heart? Your answer will determine what you believe about your need for Christ. A Reduced Christ Cannot Save Perhaps the most sobering finding concerns the identity of Jesus. Fifty-six percent of Canadians agree that Jesus was a great teacher but not God, while another 18 percent are uncertain. This is not simply atheism. It is redefinition. To reduce Christ is to reject the Christ revealed in Scripture. A merely human teacher cannot bear the sins of the world. A moral example cannot defeat death. A religious leader cannot reconcile fallen humanity to a holy God. Only the eternal Son of God can save. Jesus declared, “Before Abraham was born, I am!” (John 8:58). He also said, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). His enemies understood precisely what He was claiming, which is why they accused Him of making Himself equal with God. Jesus did not leave open the option of admiring Him while denying His identity. Either He is Lord, or He is not who He claimed to be. So I ask you directly: Who is Jesus Christ to you? Is He merely a teacher? A moral example? A comforting religious figure? Or is He the living Son of God, the crucified and risen Savior, and the Lord before whom every knee will bow? Only one of those answers leads to eternal life. Moral Drift Follows Theological Drift When people lose clarity about God, they inevitably lose clarity about right and wrong. Moral confusion does not arise in isolation. It follows theological confusion. That is why marriage is redefined. Human identity is redefined. Sexual morality is redefined. Even Truth itself is redefined. But when everything is redefined, nothing remains true. Large numbers of Canadians now reject Biblical teaching concerning marriage as the lifelong union of one man and one woman, sexual ethics rooted in Scripture, and God’s moral authority over human identity. In some areas, agreement and disagreement are nearly evenly divided—not because society has reached clarity, but because it has lost its foundation. When God’s authority is rejected, morality becomes negotiable. Right and wrong are no longer received from the Creator; they are determined by desire, consensus, or political power. That path does not lead to freedom. It leads to bondage and fragmentation. The Church Must Not Mirror the Culture’s Confusion What does all this mean for the Church? It means we are no longer ministering in a culture that simply rejects Christianity. We are ministering in a culture that has reconstructed it. People may believe in a god, but not the God of the Bible. They may admire Jesus, but refuse to submit to Him. They may value spirituality, but reject Biblical Truth. This is not the hour for a softer message, a quieter Gospel, or a diluted discipleship. It is the hour for clarity. When the culture is confused about God, the Church must not be. When the culture is uncertain about Truth, the Church must proclaim it. When the culture is drifting, the Church must remain anchored to the unchanging Word of God. This does not mean we speak with hostility or arrogance. Biblical conviction is never an excuse for cruelty. We proclaim Truth because we love those who are lost. We warn because eternity is real. We call people to repentance because there is forgiveness, grace, and new life in Jesus Christ. God is not looking for clever strategies that imitate the world. He is looking for surrendered and obedient hearts. In every generation, He accomplishes His purposes through men and women who refuse to bow to confusion. The Answer Is Faithful Discipleship The diagnosis is serious, but it is not ultimate. Canada’s theological fragmentation is real, measurable, and visible—but it is not sovereign. The Word of God has not changed. The Gospel has not weakened. Christ has not been dethroned. The Holy Spirit has not withdrawn. Therefore, the call of this hour is not despair, but discipleship; not retreat, but proclamation; not confusion, but conviction; and above all, not compromise, but Christ. Biblical discipleship means more than identifying error in the culture. It means submitting every part of our own lives to Jesus Christ. It means reading and obeying the Word of God, teaching sound doctrine in our homes and churches, repenting of known sin, praying for spiritual awakening, proclaiming the Gospel, and equipping new believers to follow Christ faithfully. A drifting culture will not excuse a drifting soul. Where do you stand—not your family, your denomination, your church background, or your cultural heritage, but you? Where do you stand before the living God? Jesus Christ is Lord. The Bible is Truth. Sin is real. Grace is sufficient. Salvation is found in Christ alone. Everything else will pass away, but the Word of God remains forever. Therefore, stand firm when the world drifts. Stand firm when Christian doctrine is questioned. Stand firm when Truth is redefined. In a fragmented nation, God is still calling His people to return to Him, to His Word, to Truth, and to faithful discipleship. Those who build their lives upon Christ will not be shaken.

QUESTION: “How can I praise God when I’m overwhelmed by fear, anxiety, and pain?” ANSWER: No matter how difficult or unjust our circumstances, ultimately, we choose whether to praise God or to neglect the praise that only He deserves. We choose what we praise God for and how long, frequently, and intensely we praise Him. Praise is driven by our will. It must never be dependent upon emotions or whims. In fact, it is precisely during those times when we don’t feel like praising God that we most need to praise Him. That’s because praise is about what God desires us to do, not about the power of life circumstances. When you take your eyes off your immediate problem and place your focus on God, you redirect yourself toward what God will do for you. For believers in Christ, this tangible, physical world is not our ultimate home. Our ultimate home is the heavenly spiritual realm where the presence and power of God is openly manifested at all times. When we start to view our present physical life in light of the ultimate spiritual life, things begin to change. Optimism, faith, and hope take root and flourish. This is how praise refocuses our feelings. God’s realm comforts, empowers, and heals us. That’s the real world we all seek.
