Praying for our nation is as important now as it has ever been.

God has shown us, from Biblical times to today, that prayer can change the course of history. When America's Founding Fathers were signing the Declaration of Independence, it could be argued that they were actually signing a declaration of dependence as they chose to follow God and His will for the nation. Over the next 100 years, the new country prospered under the direction of God and His Word. Then as a nation, we began to stray.

God delivers His people when they come to Him in prayer.

The greatest threat to America today is the Lord's wrath. It is not the economy, environment, or Islamic terrorism—it is His wrath. However, nations change when God's people pray. We see this principle hold true in the Bible again and again: God delivers His people when they come to Him in prayer.

Do you remember Hannah and Elkanah's story? They wanted a son so desperately; then, after years of prayer, Hannah bore Samuel. He was a blessing not only to Hannah, who dedicated him to the Lord at an early age, but Samuel was also a blessing to millions of people. As a prophet of God, he led God's people back to Him, and he anointed King David, from whom would come our Messiah, Jesus Christ. One woman's dedication to the Lord and persistence in prayer changed our whole world.

As we consider how to pray for our nation, let's look to Scripture and allow God's Word to guide our prayers.

  • Look to Romans 13:1: "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God."

Prayer: Father, help me to pray regularly for those in leadership over our nation. Lord, help our leaders with the decisions that they must make on a daily basis that affect our country and world. You have placed them in these positions, and I thank You for Your sovereignty. Surround our nation's leaders with godly counselors, that they would resolve issues in a way that blesses Your name and the people of this country. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

  • Look to 2 Chronicles 7:14: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

Prayer: Lord, I know that an awakening in our nation won't start from the outside—it must begin with Your people. It starts with me. So I humble myself today and look to You for help and guidance. I pray for a revival of repentance in our nation, that the lost and lukewarm would turn to You. Thank You for Your mercy and love. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

  • Look to Psalm 22:28: "For dominion belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations."

Prayer: Father God, You are the only constant that we have. You are the King of the world, and You are the ultimate one we look to. Today, I pray that I honor You and those that You have placed in a position of authority. Help me to remember that Your plan outshines and outlasts anything that I could ever come up with. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Now is the time to wake up and turn to our powerful God.
